BT Scotland has appointed Shonaig Macpherson, one of Scotland’s most prominent business leaders, to the chair of the BT Scotland board.

She takes over from current chairman Iain Robertson, former chief executive of the Royal Bank of Scotland’s corporate banking and financial markets division, who has stepped down after serving his four-year term.

BT CEO Ian Livingston said: “For the past four years BT has benefited greatly from Iain’s wide business experience in both the public and private sectors and I’d like to thank him for his strategic leadership and sharing his innovative thoughts with us.

“It’s great to have Shonaig on board as his replacement. Shonaig’s business knowledge in all areas of technology and the expertise she has gained working across different organisations are a great asset for a company working in the devolved Scotland.”

Shonaig said: “BT Scotland is a key player in the national economy so I’m very proud to have been asked to chair the board. I know the company well having served as an executive member of the BT Scotland board and I’ll be working hard to build on the success we have already achieved.”

Born in Irvine, Shonaig Macpherson is chairman of the Scottish Council for Development and Industry, ITI Scotland, The Prince’s Trust Scotland and The Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust.

She was formerly senior partner of the law firm McGrigors, specialising in intellectual property, and is a member of the Cultural Commission.

In 2005 she became the first woman to chair the National Trust for Scotland and a year later she was awarded the CBE in the New Year Honours. Shonaig is married with two sons and lives in Linlithgow. She is the third chair of BT Scotland, which celebrated its 10th anniversary last month.
